The Pennines form an unbroken range of hills from the English midlands to the Scottish borders a distance of some 250 miles. Forming the main watershed in the north of England, the Pennines split the country into east and west and are often referred to as the "backbone of England.
The landscape is formed of upland moors from which rivers flow that fashion fertile valleys called dales. The combination of hills and dales create one of the most picturesque regions of Britain containing three national parks, the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Northumbrian National Park; whilst the Northern Pennines are an area of outstanding natural beauty and has recently been awarded the status of a European Geopark.
