The Francis Frith Collection Francis Frith was a fine nineteenth century landscape photographer of the Middle East and United Kingdom. Although born in 1822, he did not begin his photographic career until 1850, when he left his cutlery business to start a studio in Liverpool. Between 1850 and 1856 he made three photographic excursions to the Middle East. In 1860 he married Anne Roslyn and embarked on an ambitious plan to photograph every town and village in the United Kingdom. Although initially taking the photographs himself, he soon became successful and was able to hire people to help him with his Project. He died in1898 but his family continued the business and carried on building the collection of UK images until the company was sold in 1968, the firm closed eventually in 1970 when Bill Jay a photographic historian identified the collection as being of national importance. Jay persuaded Rothmans to buy the collection. The Rothmans re-launched the the archive in 1976 calling it the Francis Frith Collection. In 1977 one of the Rothman executives John Buck bought the collection from Rothman's and it has been run as an independent company since. The Francis Frith Collection is is recognised as probably the only privately owned photographic collection of national importance. englishdales.com is pleased to a part of the Frith Partner Network and Bring to you Photos of bygone days in the Dales.
