Because of a disastrous fire which engulfed the town in the late 1600 ‘s there are very few houses remaining older than the beginning of the eighteenth century. However, the plan of the town still follows the medieval layout, with many narrow streets and lanes to explore. The houses on Front Street retain the long narrow gardens characteristic of medieval times. In medieval times Wolsingham was a
holy place; being the home to the hermit Aelric and the pirate saint;
Saint Godric, who founded
Finchale Priory. The town is also recorded as the site of a
miracle, where a young girl was killed in an accident
involving a horse and her life was
restored. But today the town’s
Holy Wood is the site of an executive
housing estate. Pictures of the 900 anniversary service of the St Aelric and St Godric. External Links
